15 combinations went through to the final event in the dressage competition, the Kur, which took place under floodlights in the Rolex stadium in front of a near capacity crowd.
The enthusiastic audience was entertained by some outstanding tests, the crowd's favourites being the Spanish combination of Juan Manuel Monoz Diaz and his 12 year old grey stallion Fuego X11, with the cheers for the final one handed movement deafening.
However the medals would go to the same 3 combinations as in the Grand Prix Special. First to go of the final five were Laura Bechtolsheimer and Mistral Hojris and they scored an excellent 85.35%. The USA favourite Steffan Peters and Ravel then put in a pleasing performance but not quite good enough to overtake the British rider with a score of 84.9%.
The final horse into the arena was the Dutch sensation Moorlands Totilas and he didn't disappoint producing a fabulous test for rider Edward Gal, securing the gold medal in emphatic style with a score of 91.80%, in what proved to be their last outing together.
